My newest canvas is based on my own drawing titled Artemisia and Judith are Badass, 2014. This drawing was based on Judith Slaying Holofernes painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, 1614-18. I found myself face to face with Artemisia's painting at the Uffizi in Florence in 2011. I wandered down a flight of stairs and discovered a whole room of Artemisia Gentileshci's work. Nobody else was there. It was summertime in Florence, at the Uffizi, and NOBODY was standing next to me. I felt like they were put there just for me. I stood in front of Judith Slaying Holofernes and my eyes just could not take it in fast enough. Of course I have seen it in print. I know that nothing compares to being face to face with them. But even with knowing that I was not prepared for the flood of emotions. I was forever changed. Seven years later I am still feeling her. I think I will be doing many, many works with that energy still pulsing through me.
I usually post my process as well, but in this case I think I will leave it be because the process stayed pretty much on point and displaying the process may not serve the experience well. But if anyone is interested, I have the photos and will gladly email them to you.
If art is the reflection of its time, then I find it fascinating that Artemisia's paintings still ring true to our time. I don't know about you, but I am tired of being patient for real change.
